Key West Florida -The Southernmost Point

by Terri | June 2nd, 2011

When you head down one of the main roads in Key West at the corner of Whitehead and South Street there is a big concrete buoy marking the Southernmost point in the USA. Tourists flock there to get a photo of themselves standing right here 90 miles from Cuba.

Southernmost Point in the USA

We caught the buoy on a rainy day in Key West Florida while we were on the Conch Train, but there were still people waiting in line to take a photo there.

If you want to stay at the Southermost point in Key West, there is a guest house a block from the ocean and the buoy that is called none other than “The Southern Most Guest House!”  The history behind this guest house is that in 1885 a Cuban cigar maker built this Victorian home but the sun kept shining on his favorite porch. What did he do? He called in the carpenters, took the house across the street pulled by mules and spun the house around so his porches had plenty of shade! How cool is that?

If you ride around on the Conch Tour which I highly recommend, you will see some of the Old Town Key West Florida homes. For some reason the residents here like lavender and pink!

When we took the Conch Tour it cost almost $30 a piece and even though it seems like a lot, the great thing about it is we had the Truck parked in a garage and were basically on foot. If we wanted to see everything there was to see in Key West, we would’ve been doing some long, hard walking. By taking the Conch Train, at least we could take a look at everything and then decide what we wanted to see.

I wish I would’ve known about buying tickets ahead of time, it would have saved me a few dollars. So that is why I am putting this link on here so that when you decide to take your vacation, you can buy your Conch Train tickets ahead and save a few dollars.
